This year, the annual Finnish Jazz Convention took place in Tampere, jointly with the Tampere Jazz Happening. The Yrjö prize 2015 was given to bassist-composer-conductor Ulf Krokfors. His long career, the refinement of his musical vision and his compelling stage presence were qualities that the Finnish Jazz Federation saw strongly in his favour as a candidate.

Pianist Joona Toivanen and drummer combo Kallio Slaaki go on a Jazz Federation tour together this week. The tour extends to eight concert venues across the country.
Have you and your band been planning a tour for autumn 2016? Will you have something special to offer that time netti casino jokes, a new album, maybe? Have you already found a body to produce and finance your tour, take care of the practicalities, marketing and ticket sales? The Finnish Jazz Federation will help two groups or two producing bodies that actively pursue their goal, have a clear vision of what they want and a realisable plan with a budget to carry out their tour.
The Finnish Jazz Federation will organise two traditional tours and two co-produced tours in the spring of 2016. Apply by an electronic form on May 3rd the latest. The Finnish Jazz Federation will complete the selection process in June.
Mikko Hassinen (b.1971) is much more than your average drummer. He is a conductor, a composer of acoustic and electronic music and a producer of jazz and classical music. As a jazz drummer Hassinen first appeared on saxophonist Jari Perkiömäki’s 1997 album Shades. He is also a sought-after studio musician: Riitta Paakki Trio and Pepa Päivinen Trio/Quartet have entrusted the drummer’s duties with Hassinen on their recordings since the millennium. In the past dozen years Hassinen has played on more than 30 albums of groups led by such veterans as saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen, vocalists Vesa-Matti Loiri and Maarit Hurmerinta and such younger-generation pop and jazz musicians as Jimi Tenor and Ninni Poijärvi.

German-born pianist Sid-Hille (b. 1961) has lived in Finland since 1994. By that time he had already travelled around the world and lived in the United States and the Netherlands, for example. In Finland, Hille has taught at the Central Ostrobothnia Conservatory, conducting also the school’s jazz orchestra. In 1997 he formed the quartet Platypus Ensemble with three younger-generation Finnish players, and the group toured the Central Europe extensively. In the 21st century, Hille has mainly devoted his time to composing and performing, being successful as a composer in the fields of big band, chamber and film music, especially.
Vuorinen holds a M.A. and in the past five years he has worked as a producer-publicist for the UMO Jazz Orchestra. Vuorinen will succeed Maati Rehor, who was appointed as the executive director for the chamber orchestra Avanti! in early August. Rehor worked for the Jazz Federation since 2008, and the Board, Office and the affiliated organizations wish Maati all the best in her new job!

Jazz-Espa took place on July 28 – August 2 on the Espa Stage, featuring William Suvanne Quartet, Sami Linna Quartet, Eliina Mäkiranta Quartet, Equally Stupid, Eero Koivistoinen Quartet, Elena & The Rom Ensemble. Jazz-Espa is produced by the Finnish Jazz Federation and supported by the Finnish Music Foundation MES and the City of Helsinki Cultural Office. The partners include Pop & Jazz Conservatory, Restaurant Kappeil and Pianoplan Ari Harenko.
Free Voices, Free Sounds Tour features free sounds from three different countries this spring, when the French-Belgian Impérial Quartet and the Finnish-Belgian Aleatoric pack their pipes and hop on the Finnish Jazz Federation tour bus.
The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yleisradio’s Varjo-Yrjö prize was rewarded for notable contribution to the Finnish jazz culture at the same event. This year’s winner was Seppo Hanste.
The Finnish Jazz Federation has produced Jazz-Espa since 2000, with the support of Helsinki Cultural Office and the Finnish Music Foundation. Jazz-Espa is free, accessible and without age restrictions. Concerts every day at 4pm and 5.30pm, with the exceptions of Mondays only at 4pm and Saturdays only at 3pm.
“It is very interesting to see the results when one form of art has inspired another,” says the curator, art critic, MA Nina Suni. “Stylistically very different artists and works of art constitute the 50 years of the Yrjö Prize. The level of accomplishment is very varied, as well; some of the artists being devoted amateurs, while others are professionals of visual arts. We have handpicked only the artistically most significant and culturally most interesting pieces from each decade for the exhibition. And in keeping with the original philosophy of the prize, a tint of playfulness will not be lacking”, she ensures.
Founded in 1966, the Finnish Jazz Federation celebrates its 50 years in enhancing the jazz culture in Finland. The anniversary celebrations begin with a concert of a jubilee orchestra, led by saxophonist Mikko Innanen. Innanen, like all the musicians and guest soloists in the band, have received the annual Yrjö prize from the Jazz Federation. The Yrjö prize is considered the highest accolade that a musician can receive for their artistic value and input to Finnish jazz. Later in the year the band tours Finnish jazz festivals with various soloists. The premiere in April Jazz displays the biggest array of guests on stage.

There is no barrier between jazz and contemporary music, but a gap, an open space, which activates the imagination and enables spontaneous creation. This applies to the composer and the performing musician alike. Producer Charles Gil and the Finnish Jazz Federation began their French-Finnish touring co-operation in 1996 and during these two decades they have presented 26 doubleheader tours in Finland. To take the celebrations on the road, French violinist Théo Ceccaldi and Finnish reedsman Pepa Päivinen go on extensive tour in February. Theó Ceccaldi Trio and Pepa Päivinen & Good Romans are all about intensive and airy chamber jazz combined with creative and lyrical soundscapes.
Joona Toivanen released his first solo piano album ‘Polarities’ on the Swedish Footprint Records in late 2013. On the album, Toivanen explores new ground by studying the possibilities of the piano as an instrument. The release concert for Polarities took place at the Savoy Theatre in Helsinki on December 14 at the inaugural festival event We Jazz 2013. In November 2014 the solo project is heard live on the Finnish Jazz Federation tour.

Free Voices, Free Sounds Tour 2015: Aleatoric + Impérial Quartet 9 – 17 March 2015
Jazz-Espa is a traditional two-week concert series of Finnish jazz that takes place in the Esplanadi Park in Helsinki. 10 to 12 bands are selected to perform at the festival. Concerts take place mainly in the afternoon at 4PM and 5:30PM each weekday. The jury is looking for acts that are suitable for outdoor performing, primarily Finnish and have not been selected to go on a Finnish Jazz Federation-produced tour or performed at Espa in the past two years.

The annual Jazz-Espa concert series takes place for the 16th time at the Espa outdoor stage uudet casino 440, in the heart of Helsinki. This year Jazz-Espa features twenty topical Finnish jazz acts from Monday the 27th of July to Friday, the 7th of August. To be in the stunning surroundings one finds in the historical Esplanade Park whilst enjoying live music in the summer sun is a wonderful experience not to be missed. On Sunday the 2nd of August there’s a mini-festival JazzPiknik at mbar’s terrace and on the Lasipalatsi square. The programme will be released on May 13.
Double-bassist Ulf Krokfors received the Yrjö prize on Friday 30 October at Tullikamarin Pakkahuone, Tampere Jazz Happening. Awarded annually by the Finnish Jazz Federation, the umbrella organisation of Finnish Jazz, the Yrjö is the most prestigious jazz prize in Finland. The Varjo-Yrjö prize, granted by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yleisradio, was given to Seppo Hanste for his active role in the jazz life of the Helsinki metropolitan area.
The Finnish jazz Federation supports two professionally produced tours for Finnish bands in Finland. The applicants must have a professional and responsible producer/production company who takes the sole responsibility of the tour’s planning, financing and execution. The tours must take place between the 1st of August and 31st of December 2015. The exhibition will be open at April Jazz Festival, in Espoo, on 20 – 24 April. From Espoo, it will go nomad, stopping at different jazz festivals with and without the Finnish Jazz Federation Anniversary Orchestra, led by Mikko Innanen. The cavalcade of Yrjös will return to the Helsinki metropolitan area, to Helsinki’s Kirjasto 10 (Library 10), towards the close of 2016. In addition to Innanen, the Anniversary Orchestra is composed of some of the most recent Yrjö-knighted artists: guitarist Teemu Viinikainen, pianist Kari Ikonen kasino online notepad, bassist Ulf Krokfors and drummer Teppo Mäkynen. At April Jazz on 22 April, there will be even more Yrjö energy on stage when the group is joined by Eero Koivistoinen, Seppo “Paroni” Paakkunainen, Severi Pyysalo, Antti Sarpila and Anna-Mari Kähärä – winners from all five decades of the prize. The orchestra’s repertoire consists of Finnish jazz from its very birth until today, as arranged by Mikko Innanen. Tickets to the concert will be available for purchase on 18 January.
