This year, the annual Finnish Jazz Convention took place in Tampere, jointly with the Tampere Jazz Happening. The Yrjö prize 2015 was given to bassist-composer-conductor Ulf Krokfors. His long career, the refinement of his musical vision and his compelling stage presence were qualities that the Finnish Jazz Federation saw strongly in his favour as a candidate. He is a conductor, a composer of acoustic and electronic music and a producer of jazz and classical music. As a jazz drummer Hassinen first appeared on saxophonist Jari Perkiömäki’s 1997 album Shades. He is also a sought-after studio musician: Riitta Paakki Trio and Pepa Päivinen Trio/Quartet have entrusted the drummer’s duties with Hassinen on their recordings since the millennium. In the past dozen years Hassinen has played on more than 30 albums of groups led by such veterans as saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen, vocalists Vesa-Matti Loiri and Maarit Hurmerinta and such younger-generation pop and jazz musicians as Jimi Tenor and Ninni Poijärvi. By that time he had already travelled around the world and lived in the United States and the Netherlands, for example. In Finland, Hille has taught at the Central Ostrobothnia Conservatory, conducting also the school’s jazz orchestra. In 1997 he formed the quartet Platypus Ensemble with three younger-generation Finnish players, and the group toured the Central Europe extensively. In the 21st century, Hille has mainly devoted his time to composing and performing, being successful as a composer in the fields of big band, chamber and film music, especially. Vuorinen holds a M.A. and in the past five years he has worked as a producer-publicist for the UMO Jazz Orchestra. Vuorinen will succeed Maati Rehor, who was appointed as the executive director for the chamber orchestra Avanti! in early August. Free Voices, Free Sounds Tour features free sounds from three different countries this spring, when the French-Belgian Impérial Quartet and the Finnish-Belgian Aleatoric pack their pipes and hop on the Finnish Jazz Federation tour bus. The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yleisradio’s Varjo-Yrjö prize was rewarded for notable contribution to the Finnish jazz culture at the same event. This year’s winner was Seppo Hanste. Founded in 1966, the Finnish Jazz Federation celebrates its 50 years in enhancing the jazz culture in Finland. The anniversary celebrations begin with a concert of a jubilee orchestra, led by saxophonist Mikko Innanen. Innanen, like all the musicians and guest soloists in the band, have received the annual Yrjö prize from the Jazz Federation. The Yrjö prize is considered the highest accolade that a musician can receive for their artistic value and input to Finnish jazz. Awarded annually by the Finnish Jazz Federation, the umbrella organisation of Finnish Jazz, the Yrjö is the most prestigious jazz prize in Finland. The Varjo-Yrjö prize, granted by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yleisradio, was given to Seppo Hanste for his active role in the jazz life of the Helsinki metropolitan area. The Finnish jazz Federation supports two professionally produced tours for Finnish bands in Finland. The applicants must have a professional and responsible producer/production company who takes the sole responsibility of the tour’s planning, financing and execution. The tours must take place between the 1st of August and 31st of December 2015.
